The Gathering of Presidents
Offered for the first time in 2006, The Gathering
of Presidents was designed specifically for new Board Presidents, Chairs and Presidents Elect with presentations and conversations
on key board leadership challenges like engaging the board, relating successfully to the executive and conducting creative
and effective board meetings.
The Gathering occured on an evening in October
and was hosted by Grange Insurance. Leadership for the session will be provided by Phil Cass of Columbus Medical Association
and Foundation and Donn Vickers of The Academy for Leadership & Governance. Both
have extensive nonprofit board and executive experience.

The Program
The content is designed aroudn the specific needs of the participants as well as
a set of core issues important to all board presidents.
The issues we address include:
- Establishing a good relationship between board and executive
- Recruiting, developing and utilizing board members
- Designing and leading effective board meetings
- Deciding what you want to take responsibility for as the leader of the board
- Preparing your board for the task of financial responsibility
The board president participants may also want us to work on such issues as:
- Executive evalution
- Strategic planning
- Endowments and planned giving
- By-laws
- Liability
The President's Institute begins with a one-day retreat held in downtown Columbus at the Vorys Gallery
and Conference Room in the Jefferson Center Carriage House. This initial retreat is followed by three monthly dinner
sessions. Registration for The President's Institute typically occurs in December with the retreat being held in January.
The Faculty
Philip Cass is CEO of the Columbus Medical Association and Foundation. He has served
as president of the Alcohol, Drug and Mental Health Board and as a board member of several college advisory groups, a theatre
company, and two community associations.
Donn Vickers has been an executive in organizations religious, educational, preservationist, and literary. He is the executive
director of The Academy for Leadership and Governance. He is also an adjunct professor in the graduate program of Arts Policy
and Administration at The Ohio State University and has authored three volumes on executive leadership and board governance.
